Not Close Off, Just More Careful

Lately, I’ve realized that my life has started to feel like one endless loop. Every day looks almost exactly the same as the day before. I wake up, go through the motions, do what I have to do, and then repeat it all over again. It’s become so repetitive that sometimes I catch myself wondering if I’m truly living or if I’m simply surviving. I’ve also lost a lot of motivation when it comes to my work. The passion that used to push me to keep going just isn’t there anymore. I still show up because I have responsibilities, because I have bills to pay, because life doesn’t stop even when your heart is hurting. But if I’m being honest with myself, I feel mentally exhausted. My body is working, but my heart isn’t in it anymore. Even talking to people has changed for me. I used to enjoy getting to know others, listening to their stories, laughing, sharing conversations, and believing that people generally had good intentions. Now, I find myself pulling away. I reply less. I don’t have the same excitement to meet new people or build new friendships. It’s not because I dislike people. It’s because somewhere along the way, I became afraid of trusting again. The breakup changed something inside me. I know people say that time heals everything, and maybe they’re right. But healing isn’t a straight line. Some mornings I wake up feeling strong, convinced that I’m finally moving on. Then there are days when a random memory, a familiar song, or a quiet moment reminds me of everything I lost, and suddenly it feels like I’m starting over again.
I’m still adjusting.
I’m still learning how to accept that the future I imagined with someone no longer exists. I’m still trying to understand how someone who once meant everything to me eventually became a stranger. Despite all of that, I’ve also come to an important realization. Maybe I shouldn’t spend the rest of my life mourning a relationship that has already ended. Maybe I shouldn’t keep holding onto someone who has already let go. Maybe I deserve to choose myself now. What surprises me, though, is realizing that there are actually people who have been waiting for me to become single again. Some have reached out directly. Others have made it obvious that they would like a chance to get to know me better. A few have even hinted that they’d like a relationship with me. But I don’t entertain any of them. Not because I think I’m too good for them. Not because I enjoy making people chase me. Not because I’m trying to play hard to get. The truth is much simpler than that. I’m scared. I’m scared of repeating the same painful cycle. I’m scared of investing my heart all over again only to watch everything fall apart. I’m scared of believing promises that eventually become empty words. I’m scared of giving someone my trust just to find myself questioning my worth all over again. People often say, “Not everyone is the same.” I know that’s true. Logically, I understand that.
But when you’ve experienced heartbreak, your heart doesn’t always listen to logic. Pain changes the way you see people. It teaches you to question everything. It makes you wonder whether someone’s kindness is genuine or temporary. It makes you hesitate before becoming emotionally attached. It makes you overthink simple situations because you’re afraid history will repeat itself. Sometimes I ask myself, “Will I ever trust someone again?”
Honestly…
I don’t know.
Maybe I will. Maybe I won’t. What I do know is that earning my trust won’t be easy anymore. The version of me who loved without fear doesn’t exist anymore. The version of me who believed every promise disappeared the day my heart was broken. If someone wants to be part of my life in the future, they won’t earn my heart through beautiful words alone. Words are easy. Consistency is hard. Loyalty is hard. Honesty is hard. Choosing someone every single day, especially when life becomes difficult—that’s hard. Those are the things I value now. Because I’ve learned that love isn’t measured by how intensely someone says “I love you.” Love is measured by how they treat you when life isn’t easy. By whether they stay when misunderstandings happen. By whether they communicate instead of disappearing. By whether they protect your heart instead of becoming the reason it breaks. I don’t want another temporary connection. I don’t want another relationship built on excitement that disappears once reality sets in. I don’t want another cycle of giving everything while slowly losing myself. I’ve done that already. I’ve loved deeply before. I gave my patience.I gave my understanding. I gave endless chances. I chose forgiveness more times than I can count because I believed love meant never giving up on someone. Looking back, I realize that loving someone shouldn’t require sacrificing your own peace. It shouldn’t mean constantly questioning your value. It shouldn’t leave you emotionally exhausted. Love should feel safe. It should feel like home. Maybe that’s why I’m so protective of my heart now. People might think I’ve become cold. Some might say I’m distant. Others might assume I’m no longer interested in relationships. But that’s not really true. The truth is, I still believe love exists. I just don’t believe it’s easy to find anymore. I believe genuine connections are rare. I believe trust takes years to build but only seconds to destroy. I believe that once your heart has been broken deeply enough, you never become the exact same person again. You become wiser. More careful. More observant. Less willing to ignore red flags. Less willing to settle for less than you deserve. Maybe that’s growth. Maybe that’s healing. Right now, I’m choosing something different. Instead of chasing love, I’m choosing to rebuild myself. I’m choosing to rediscover the parts of me that I neglected while trying so hard to make someone else happy. I’m choosing to work on my dreams. To create a life that makes me proud. To become emotionally stronger than I was yesterday. If someone comes into my life one day, I hope they understand why I hesitate. I hope they don’t take my caution personally. I hope they understand that my walls weren’t built because I wanted to keep people out. They were built because I know exactly what it feels like to give someone complete access to your heart and watch them walk away with pieces of it. Maybe one day someone will come along who doesn’t ask me to lower my walls overnight. Maybe they’ll patiently earn my trust, little by little, through their actions instead of their promises. Or maybe I’ll discover that the greatest love story I’ll ever have is the one I build with myself. Either way, I know one thing for certain. I don’t ever want to lose myself trying to keep someone else. I’ve learned that my peace is valuable. My heart is valuable. My trust is valuable. And if I ever say “yes” to someone again, it won’t be because I’m lonely. It won’t be because I need someone to complete me. It will be because they consistently showed me that they deserved a place in my life. Until then, I’ll keep moving forward. I’ll keep healing. I’ll keep rebuilding.
Some days will still hurt. Some days I’ll still miss what I thought my future would be. But I also know that every painful experience has taught me something important. Maybe this chapter isn’t the end of my story. Maybe it’s simply the beginning of becoming the strongest version of myself. It’s difficult, isn’t it? Learning how to trust again after your heart has been broken is one of the hardest things anyone can go through. But maybe healing doesn’t mean forgetting the past. Maybe healing means remembering it without allowing it to define the rest of your life. And when the day finally comes that I can genuinely smile again, love again, and trust again, I hope it will be because I chose someone who protected my heart instead of breaking it. Until that day comes, I’ll continue choosing myself.
